The Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center (SIRC), at Arizona State University, is looking for two (2) employees who desire a deeper understanding of Motivational Interviewing (MI).
MI is an evidence-based practice that is extensively used in the behavioral health, psychology, healthcare, health coaching, education, and other related fields.
It is a collaborative conversation style designed to promote the intrinsic commitment and desire for long-term healthy behavior changes.
MI is a strengths-based and empowerment approach to helping others.
The MyMI Instructional Specialist will be trained in the use of the style, analysis of fidelity, and engage in coaching for participants.
The hours may fluctuate from week to week depending on lab deadlines, qualitative analysis needs, etc.
The candidate should plan to work most weeks around 15-20 hours, with higher workloads expected during coding deadlines at the lab.
The typical activities of a MyMI Instructional Specialist include administrative tasks to support curriculum development and instructional design for workforce development services housed within the MyMI Lab; administrative tasks to support the MyMI Lab’s operations (e.
g.
, reporting, submitting invoices, and managing coding deadlines); attendance at weekly synchronous Group Coaching Sessions; and Motivational Interviewing coding and sample reviews (e.
g.
, analysis efforts for coding samples, reviewing samples coded by student MI Coaches, completing coding samples, etc.
).
The coding and analysis may include transcribing and evaluating recorded interactions; providing coaching and feedback using reliable and valid instruments that measure fidelity to the MI style; and role-modeling the MI style through MI-adherent coaching language.
No prior MI experience is required; however, preference will be given to candidates with a naturally empathic approach to interpersonal interactions.
Extensive training in MI as well as the necessary fidelity measurement tools (e.
g.
, the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity tool, or MITI) will be provided.
This initial training program is a combination of a self-guided Canvas course designed specifically for the lab, group coaching sessions, and continuous 1:1 collaboration with the Coding Lab Supervisor throughout the process to guide and support your efforts.
The MyMI Lab is an inclusive, collaborative, and empowering environment designed to provide a variety of learning opportunities for candidates beyond job duties based on their unique learning and professional goals.
Ongoing employment is contingent upon successful completion of this training program and accurately completing coaching assignments to an 80% rate of agreement with the industry standards for the MITI instrument.
This is measured continually through quarterly exercises outside of the usual coaching workload.
Individuals representing or interested in social work, counseling, healthcare, nursing, healthy lifestyle coaching, nutrition, exercise science, primary care, dentistry, education, teaching, psychology, psychiatry, substance use treatment, criminal justice, occupational therapy, social sciences, research, or any related field are encouraged to apply.
