WILDLIFE EDUCATION CURATOR Job Location: Address: 5000 West Carefree Highway, Phoenix, Arizona Posting Details: Salary: $56,098 - $100,989 Grade: 24 Closing Date: 01/01/2024 Job Summary: The Arizona Game and Fish Department is currently seeking a Curator to join our dynamic wildlife conservation education team.
This role plays an integral part in ensuring our husbandry and animal behavior management practices are upheld to the highest standards while still supporting the guest experience.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced, driven, engaging, curator who thrives in a visionary role with broad responsibilities, rapid shifts in priorities and excels at project management and problem solving.
The preferred candidate must be a collaborative team player that understands the intricacies of providing a world class guest experience while still ensuring the health and safety of the wildlife in our care.
Job Duties: Major responsibilities will include: - Manage, through direct reports, the Department's wildlife education programs (Outreach, Wildlife Center, Wildlife Education and Tortoise Adoption).
Managing staff includes hiring, coaching, mentoring and identifying development opportunities.
Develop and manage the volunteers for the Wildlife Center and Tortoise Adoption Program, including the development of volunteer training.
Manage the programmatic budget and adhere to procurement policy.
- Manage all aspects of operations and maintenance of the Department's Wildlife Center, coordinate and schedule routine maintenance, repair and new project construction.
Conduct regular facility inspections for areas that require repair or replacement.
Manage all aspects of the fleet vehicles and electric cart, ensuring utilization and regular maintenance.
- Manage the Department's Wildlife Center's non-releasable live wildlife collection of mammals, birds of prey and reptiles.
Manage all aspects of captive live wildlife husbandry, ensure compliance with captivity standards and licensing standards, develop SOP's and training for staff and interns.
- Manage the wildlife education and outreach programs: including all formal wildlife education (Focus:Wild Arizona, publications, brochures, professional development, classroom program and resource development.
Manage the Wildlife Education Outreach public programs utilizing non releasable live wildlife, prioritize events, develop new events and partners to deliver wildlife education programming to the general public statewide.
- Manage all aspects of the Desert Tortoise Adoption Program, coordinate with veterinarians on tortoise care protocols and evaluations, manage all aspects of customer service.
- May serve as the Education Branch Chief when necessary and performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): The candidate must have knowledge of/in: wildlife conservation, familiarity with native wildlife of Arizona, basic knowledge of wildlife, ecology, biology and other sciences required for the preparation and presentation of educational programs, captivity standards, animal husbandry techniques, federal, state and all other applicable statutes and laws governing the use of live wildlife in educational programs, live wildlife exhibit and enclosure design, knowledge of facility management including maintenance and repair, interpretive display design and development that incorporates multiple learning styles, supervision and leadership, and event planning, coordination and management.
The candidate must have skill in: written and verbal communication, strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to constructively manage differences of opinion among diverse internal and external customers, skills in facility and enclosure repair or enhancement, strong presentation skills, expertise in project management, contract negotiations, live wildlife handling, time management, report preparation, budget management, computer skills with a strong, understanding of Google suite of applications and excellent organizational and problems solving skills.
The candidate must be able to design, develop and implement wildlife education programming for formal and informal audiences, maintain the highest level of quality as it relates to the Center’s public and professional image pertaining to animal health, training and husbandry, interpret and follow department operating policies, procedures and directives, multi-task across diverse program areas with changing priorities while managing multiple budgets, facilitate and lead internal and external meetings, use critical thinking to solve complex problems and supervise staff in all aspects of their job.
Selective Preference(s): The preferred candidate will have at least 3 years of experience handling live wildlife used in educational programs and managing education and wildlife staff and volunteers.
The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of live wildlife facility management including operations and maintenance.
The preferred candidate will have strong project management skills, as well as strong leadership skills with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
A Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife, Zoology or related field is preferred.
