This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in gaining hands-on practical work experience while working with a diverse group of professionals in the fields of wildlife science, biological science, wildlife management, and many other professions within the Department.
Student interns are hired on a temporary basis and paid an hourly rate of $14.
35 or $15.
40 for returning interns.
Interns are not benefit eligible and work at the discretion of the appointing authority.
Interns may be employed through their approved assignment or the department determines that the work is no longer required.
Assignments are typically full-time unless indicated by the hiring supervisor.
Job Duties: The Wildlife Intern will work on wildlife connectivity research projects with a variety of taxa.
Duties will include: monitoring wildlife use of highway crossing structures using trail cameras; conducting road cruising surveys for reptiles, amphibians, and mammals; participating in road mortality surveys to identify wildlife-vehicle collision hot spots; assisting in the implementation of wildlife movement studies, including survey, capture, fitting GPS transmitters, and retrieving transmitters from the field.
Work assignments will be split between the field and office and will typically be scheduled Monday through Friday.
Projects are located throughout the state, but the positions will be based out of Phoenix.
Intern will be mentored as part of a research team, and tasks will be completed both in teams and independently after appropriate training.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): The candidate must have the ability to start the position by early February 2024.
The preferred candidate should have a passion for wildlife conservation with a strong work ethic, be detail oriented and have the ability to hike several miles off-trail in various environments as required.
Preferred skills include basic navigation (GPS and/or map and compass), trail camera use, Esri field applications (Survey 123, Field Maps, QuickCapture), species identification, technical writing, GIS, radio telemetry Pre-Employment Requirements: Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of curriculum leading towards a Bachelor’s or higher level degree on a full time basis (usually 12 semester hours) and pursuing a major in Wildlife Biology or closely related field applicable to the internship opportunity (subject to verification).
Recent (within the past year) graduates are also eligible to apply.
