Primary City/State: Phoenix, Arizona Department Name: Surgical Pathology-BUMCP Work Shift: Day Job Category: Lab POSITION SUMMARY This position is responsible for the receipt of renal specimens into the department; preparation of samples for analytical testing that includes utilization of the electron microscope and other department specific equipment and testing methods.
This position ensures the functional operation of the Electron Microscopy Dept.
, the continuity of daily workflow and prioritization of work; trains personnel; maintains procedure manuals and quality documents and reports quality control and quality assurance issues to appropriate resources; assists with department compliance with all pertinent laboratory accrediting agencies and regulatory requirements (e.
g.
, CLIA ’88, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA).
CORE FUNCTIONS 1.
Performs testing in an accurate and timely manner according to established policies and performance standards with a knowledge level determined for that testing.
Responsible for startup, calibration and accuracy of procedures and instrumentation.
Exercises independent judgment and identifies appropriate resources in performance of assigned duties utilizing knowledge and skills.
Demonstrates comprehension of theory and clinical relevance of testing.
Demonstrates problem resolution and decision making skills for routine operational and technical problems.
Performs basic troubleshooting of computer problems.
Demonstrates awareness and complies with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements related to area of responsibility.
2.
Provides appropriate support to pathologists and clinicians for collection of kidney biopsies.
Ensures electron microscopy staff members provide required assistance at scheduled procedure start times.
3.
Recognizes and ensures validity of abnormal patient and/or QC results for testing.
Ensures accuracy of test results.
Participates in detecting and documenting occurrences that deviate from defined procedures.
Promotes and consistently meets department standards for productivity and quality.
4.
Ensures the appropriate use of supplies and materials and assists with inventory management.
Ensures efficient utilization of reagents and supplies.
Recognizes and provides input towards opportunities for improvements in financial performance to decrease costs, improve productivity, and improve service.
5.
Contributes to projects identified by the supervisor.
Performs well in supervisor’s absence and is active in training and competency of laboratory personnel.
Completes and documents all competency training as required.
6.
Supports the Surgical Pathology team through cross-training and job sharing.
Attends and participates in staff meetings.
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None DIRECTLY REPORTING None MATRIX OR INDIRECT REPORTING Surgical Pathology Assistants, Anatomic Pathology Administrative Assistants.
TYPE OF SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Assists with training and overseeing various activities.
SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY Primarily departmental responsibility.
Involved in interdepartmental communication and activities.
Internal Customer - Employees of the system.
External Customer - Nurses, physicians, office personnel, and vendors.
This position reports to the department supervisor, other higher level management staff within Anatomic Pathology and may take direction from the renal pathologists regarding technical expectations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT FACTORS Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
Use material handling equipment to push/and or pull up to 75 pounds and required to lift, push and/or pull up to 25 pounds.
Requires manual dexterity.
Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical, electrical and biological hazards.
Ability to distinguish colors and to take direction and assimilate instructions quickly.
Requires use of personal computer, printers, copiers, telephone, fax and department specific equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of computer systems used in the department and ability to perform basic troubleshooting.
Ability to discover and resolve problems throughout testing.
Self-directed and motivated.
Ability to multi-task throughout the department.
Ability to demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills.
Highly developed interpersonal skills.
Excellent knowledge of mathematics.
Ability to take direction and assimilate instructions quickly.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Associate’s degree in chemical, physical, biological or medical laboratory science.
Two (2) years’ applicable laboratory experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological or medical laboratory science.
Additional education and/or experience in electron microscopy or anatomic pathology.
