oversees the daily operation of physical sciences and engineering laboratories with an emphasis in chemistry at both CGCC campuses.
This includes supervising lab technician staff in preparing chemistry labs, monitoring equipment, materials, and chemistry stockroom for instruction and laboratory experiments.
The instructional services coordinator position includes duties related to project management including operational planning and development, lab and chemical safety, administration of budget, problem-resolution and technical assistance,staff performance evaluations, training, hiring, discipline, and termination according to procedures.
The Instructional Services Coordinator Sr is under the supervision of the Physical Sciences and Engineering Division Chair, and is expected to be self-motivated, work independently, and foster a safety culture in all science programs.
This position collaborates and works with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students in multiple labs, potentially at multiple locations.
Essential Functions 20% Performs project management including operational planning, development, administration of budget, problem-resolution and technical assistance for instructional program, including, but not limited to Chemistry laboratory settings.
Communicates with vendors and initiates ordering and purchasing of equipment and supplies based on inventory needs 20% Oversees and provides leadership for the coordination, set-up, and maintenance for all laboratory needs and learning exercises and experiments including maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies as well as developing operating policies, practices and work standards for laboratory operations: Maintain / establish chemical waste disposal practice within the chemistry labs Coordinate with colleagues’ campus-wide to minimize chemical cost disposal for both campuses and optimize efficiency Maintain / Establish Chemical Hygiene Plan Develops, recommends and implements operating policies, practices and work standards for laboratory operations within safety standards 20% Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of staff; Leads/participates in hiring, discipline and termination activities when necessary 15% Provides training and guidance in area of expertise; oversees the maintenance of files, records, program materials and documentation 15% Develops policies and procedures to support instructional program in lab setting, monitors program guidelines and ensures compliance with applicable policies, regulations, laws, maintenance/repair schedules of instructional program including, but not limited to, the safe and efficient operation of the lab and equipment.
Ensures compliance with safety procedures and best practices, including the disposal of chemical waste.
10% Collaborates and consults with program faculty and staff on program design, effectiveness, quality and outcomes, recommends modifications and additions to program; other duties as assigned commensurate to grade level of position.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in education, organizational development or directly related field and two (2)years of full time equivalent of related experience such as providing advanced program coordination and consultation that includes one or more of the following: planning, development, and/or implementing program projects and activities in area of science labs.
OR Associates Degree from a regionally accredited institution and four (4) years of full time equivalent of related experience such as providing advanced program coordination and consultation that includes one or more of the following: planning, development, and/or implementing program projects and activities in area of science labs.
OR High School diploma or GED and six (6) years of full time equivalent of related experience such as providing advanced program coordination and consultation that includes one or more of the following: planning, development, and/or implementing program projects and activities in area of science labs.
Desired Qualifications 1.
Bachelor of science or higher degree in chemistry or biochemistry from a regionally accredited institution 2.
Demonstrated experience with basic lab safety procedures, including safe handling, storage, and correct disposal of hazardous chemicals & materials, and knowledge of the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
3.
Documented, successful completion of an OSHA Safety Institute class or a comparable lab safety program (such as an LSI 3-day course).
4.
Two or more years of experience with direct supervision of laboratory operations, and maintenance of scientific instrumentation such as infrared spectrometers or nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, within the context of higher education laboratory setting.
5.
Two or more years of experience coordinating or managing others on projects.
6.
Two or more years of experience in collaborating or assisting faculty on instructing students on chemistry instrumentation, such as infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers 7.
Documented experience with computer applications used for (1) ordering and purchasing supplies, (2) maintaining inventories, (3) for electronic communication, and (4) utilization of chemical instrumentation.
Special Working Conditions May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, fumes, particulates, and organisms that may present health hazards if not handled according to safety protocols.
May be required to work at multiple sites or locations.
May be required to lift or carry up to 50 lbs.
May be required to work evenings and weekends.
May be required to work outdoors.
