SUMMARY The Structural Engineer supports the project team with a broad understanding of structural engineering principles and practices, building systems, and construction practices to successfully deliver coordinated structural contract documents to clients.
This role provides complete structural analysis, design, and documentation for commercial building projects involving reinforced concrete, structural steel, reinforced masonry, cold-formed metal framing, and wood.
Assigned projects will allow progressive responsibility under the direct supervision of the Engineer-of-Record to manage concurrent projects of small to moderate size, as well as portions of major projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Design complete structural systems of moderate size or complexity and prepare calculations using company standard software programs Prepare complete drawings, reports, and specifications on assigned projects throughout all design phases with limited direction Utilize building information modeling (BIM) to develop three-dimensional models of the building structural systems; assist and provide oversight to junior staff involved in BIM modeling Provide coordination of project designs with other building disciplines Collaborate with project team to develop preliminary and final models, designs, drawings, plan sets, and specifications for delivery to the client.
Conduct independent field condition assessments and construction site observations Complete construction administration tasks, including the review of shop drawings and submittals, responding to requests for information, and preparing site observation reports Take active role in quality control processes on assigned projects to perform engineering and constructability reviews Provide mentorship to junior team members Manage time to meet assigned project schedules Develop and maintain positive client relationships Additional duties as assigned COMPETENCIES Critical evaluation and thinking – independently evaluates, analyzes, and synthesizes complex situations and information to understand issues, identify options, adapt standard techniques, devise new approaches, and apply engineering judgement to solve problems Attention to detail – works in a conscientious, consistent, and thorough manner Client focus – provides added value through service excellence to internal and external clients Continuous learning – identifies and proactively addresses learning and developmental needs to improve professional competence Job ownership – exhibits independent initiative and decision-making ability, involving various levels of risk and ambiguity, to ensure assigned tasks are completed; displays a commitment to excellence and adherence to company values Interpersonal and leadership skills – confidently and effectively interacts with clients, customers, officials, contractors, and others through written and verbal communications; develops, maintains, and builds relationships Results management – organizes time, work, and resources to accomplish objectives in the most effective and efficient way Teamwork – works collaboratively with others to achieve organizational goals, participates actively, shares responsibility and rewards, and contributes to the capability of the team KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Building structural systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards Structural design codes, building codes and applicable standards Evaluating, selecting, and specifying alternative structural systems Value engineering and cost estimating principles Other building disciplines and their integration with the structural design.
Skilled in: Using the right engineering methods or formulas to solve problems Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems Performing complete design of structural systems Developing construction documents using Revit Verbal and written communication Ability to: Meet deadlines and budget with successful completion of deliverables Communicate and work well with other departments Work under pressure and with minimal supervision Work with customers and client base Work in a team-based environment Recognize and manage deviations from standard design practices during design and construction Think analytically and thoroughly, while being resourceful and detail-oriented Focus on team and customer service Be continuously self-motivated, hardworking, flexible REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Registered Professional Engineer in one state; or the ability to become licensed within one year Passage of a Principles and Practices of Engineering Examination Bachelor’s degree in Architectural or Civil Engineering from an ABET-Accredited program 4+ years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience Proficiency using Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and structural engineering software Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Master’s degree in Architectural or Civil Engineering with a Structural Engineering focus Passage of the 16-hour Structural Engineering Buildings Examination Previous experience leading project teams 6+ years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience Advanced proficiency in the use of Revit, AutoCAD, and engineering modeling tools Active membership in professional and technical organizations and engaged in life-long learning PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Must be capable of occasionally climbing ladders and of traversing obstacles.
Regularly required to type, file, or lift office supplies up to 20 pounds.

The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
The employee is occasionally required to visit construction sites, traverse uneven surfaces, and wear a hard hat.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
